HISTORY OF WWNL AM-1080

WWNL serves the Pittsburgh, PA area with a population of 3.2 million and boasts a power of 50,000 watts, the maximum wattage allowed by the Federal Communications Commission for AM radio stations. WWNL began broadcasting in 1947 under the call letters of WILY. In 1947, the call letters were changed to WEEP, a "Top 40" station. Throughout the 1960's and 1970's, the station maintained a country music format in which it enjoyed great success throughout the Pittsburgh metro area.

Under the call letters WPGR in the 1990's, the station began airing Gospel music. In 1999, the station adopted the current call letters of WWNL and began airing Christian music along with Christian talk programs.

Wilkins Communications Network acquired the 50,000 watt station in 2001 and continued the Christian format for the past 12 years.
